Integrating Social-Emotional Learning and Character Education (SECD) into School Lessons

A child’s learning develops at home and school. The classroom setting plays a crucial role in student academic and social behavior. Dove et al. (2018) found that educational communities and family relationships support each other for a more significant impact on students’ Social-Emotional Learning and Character Education (SECD). Family, school, and community are crucial to promoting moral responsibility. A strong sense of self is vital for communicating with others effectively and developing healthy relationships. All society members should participate and contribute to a student’s well-being.

Integrating SECD is more than a school-wide lesson presented by video or PowerPoint for one day or days spread throughout the school year. The learning goal, objectives, instructional method, and activities align with state standards. Students read daily; therefore, a lesson can include an article or mini-lesson regarding character education. Schools must increase awareness and practice ethical behaviors to preserve civility by incorporating activities into standards-based instruction.
